I live in a very dry climate located in Idaho. I moved here 5 years ago, and found a very disturbing occurrence. Because of the harsh, dry climate, I noticed my skin became very dry. Not only that, but my heels became incredibly dry and even cracked! This became very painful at times, and hindered me from walking.
I tried all types of lotions, and found most were a temporary fix at best, meaning only for a few hours, then my heels were back to being cracked and dry. I have never really given much thought to my heels, feet, or skin, I'm a man, we don't think about stuff like that. However, nature forced the issue, and painfully, I had to research and experience the effects of different methods and lotions until I found the right one.
First I would lather my heels and feet with lotion, this would be a temporary fix, leaving my feet and heels soft. However, two days later, I was back in the same situation that I started in. I finally tried Neutrogena Hand Cream. This is expensive, but worth it. I would only need a small dab, and place it on my heels and feet, and found that it lasted up to about 5 days. I was very happy, but eventually the pain returned.
Another idea was to use a natural pumice stone on my heels, to exfoliate the skin, and get rid of all that dry dead skin. It worked some what, but I still found that the dry skin came back. I think on a regular basis, this would work, but I still prefer a lotion.
Now, I have kids, and when they were a baby I found an ointment that was perfect for babies skin. I didn't think to use it for myself until I was out of ideas on how to heal my heels. The product I found to be the best and what I am currently using is, Aquaphor Healing ointment. It seriously works. My dry, cracked skin not only heals my heels, but leaves them soft and I can walk without pain. I find that putting the ointment on at night and wearing socks really allows the ointment to work in to the skin. Most important, if I found my heel started to get dry again, put a dab on, and rub into the skin, and the dry skin will be gone. Its a great product and a fix for those who have dry cracked heels and skin.
